For Derren Brown, the answers can be found inside his brain, which is filled with the neurotransmitters dopamine and oxytocin.

“I’m the type of person that has never been good at magic, so whenever something happens that seems to just fly by I just feel so good,” he says.

While Brown is working hard to help others, he does admit that he is getting “a little bit of magic” in his life when it comes to his work as a child advocate.

“There was a woman who lost her baby and it was just one of these things that kind of happened in your life that if you really didn’t have anything else else going on in your life, it was hard for you to really be able to put yourself through something like that and try to find a way to help her make the best possible life for her son,” he says.

Brown says he is proud to be helping others in his own way, and his advice to other caregivers is to be authentic.

“If you’re not really authentic to the people for whom you give care, then there’s nothing you can give out that’s not real,” he says.

In some ways, Brown doesn’t want to be a bad person.

“It’s not something that I’m looking to have to do to myself. I don’t make that decision of, ‘I’m a bad person. I’m going to try and make every single person in that situation happy,'” he tells Yahoo Parenting.

“What I try to do in my own life is that I try to do my best to be a good father, a good husband, a good friend, an able volunteer. I try to do my best to help them, even if that doesn’t lead to them being happy, but I try to do my best to do it in a way that will make them feel good about themselves and give them hope for their future,” he says.

Brown acknowledges there are times when he thinks to ourselves, “I wonder if I’m truly the best parent for the people I’m trying to help.”

“But at the end of the day, it really is my job to help each of those people feel better about themselves as individuals,” he says.

Brown says he loves parenting his grandson, who is 3 years old.
