I’ll be happy to sharpen anything that’s bent or broken. Just ask.
There are so many ways of learning about the history of pencils and we may just have a few tips of the iceberg.
I love drawing with pencils because the lines are so close. I prefer to put different colours on the ends of lines.
The way shapes and lines are drawn with pencils is something I’ve never quite mastered. I find it’s all about creating a texture, some of the time with just the ends of letters or letters on a line.
I’ve learnt to draw with pencils but it’s not always the easiest thing to do. Sometimes I just do what feels natural and get it done.
Your website is all about the history of pencils, can you give us some tips on how to become better?
That’s the interesting part! I think it’s a pretty universal experience in any artist, whether it’s drawing or painting. If you’re drawing something with a pen on paper, your eyes are on the paper so any errors are more obvious to you than in some other medium.
I think the best answer to how to learn pencils for beginners is that it’s all down to learning a lot of techniques and being able to get to know them well. You learn more from looking at a lot of different people than you do from just reading what someone wrote down, so take part in discussions and get to know each other. I think that’s the way to go.
Your site also has a lot of drawings from kids as it’s all about how their drawing is progressing. What does that teach them which is particularly important?
Yeah it’s really the way we interact with each other as humans. Drawing with pencils is so much more than just a tool for a person to hold and draw!
Drawing with pen and ink doesn’t mean you have to be a good artist, but you can learn the techniques in the right way so you can make something really powerful that will stand out for someone who doesn’t have a huge vocabulary or is not interested in art, but might appreciate art.
What else have you done that’s influenced your work? Do you see yourself becoming a master of this medium?
I’m going to have to say I do believe in the medium, I think it’s amazing. As a kid reading comic books and comics and movies, you get used to seeing things in your imagination.
