“A lot of people get hung up on words and phrases like ‘purity,’ ‘purity culture’ and all these things,” says the man in the video, who goes by the name of “Kenny.” “We’re not just talking about one aspect, we’re talking about every aspect of a society that is trying to create a culture where you’re not allowed to have sex.
“This culture is not what we want. We do not want any kind of purity culture.”
As many people have noted, this man is referring to Western civilization as a whole. This makes complete sense, as the idea of a “purity culture” is a really gross one. I’ve covered the “purity culture,” for those who don’t know, in detail before. It involves sex in a very rigid, patriarchal, puritanical way. And it involves an entire, religious, and religious-based hierarchy of beliefs around sex, that places the sanctity of a man and woman in opposition, and where anything deemed “immoral” is condemned with extreme prejudice.
In the same way, if you remove the “purity culture” from the context of Western society, it becomes very difficult to take the whole thing seriously, at least at first glance. It is the opposite of “normal,” “innocent,” “purity,” etc. It’s the whole thing against which we try to judge all behavior, all actions, and all cultures.
But if we take a step back, it’s really less about purity, and more about what is happening beyond what any Western culture can possibly do about it. In other words, it’s just one more tool in the arsenal, like racism or sexism, used against the whole world. It’s also one of those tools in the arsenal that has been used against people of color, women, LGBT community, etc, in the past, and has been used to keep people from ever thinking in terms of justice and equality.
Here are three common ways that people use “purity” to try to control people.
