Record vertical and horizontal
Most of them are horizontal, as you have probably guessed. However, if you want to measure vertical movement, a vertical axis recording can give pretty good results. You want to use a horizontal axis so that you can easily compare the measurements in different places.
For example, let’s assume that the user is on a desk and a keyboard is attached to the console. If the user moves his mouse anywhere on that desk, we will capture the movement without any problems. However, if the user moves his mouse vertically at the desk, the vertical velocity of the mouse will change. This vertical velocity will be affected by both the height and the width (and therefore the direction) of the desk.
So, record horizontal data by recording the vertical velocity of the mouse, rather than just the vertical position to be recorded. This will be much better than recording vertical data which can only tell you if the mouse went down. For example:
