Well, I like to think of it as a language where the words and their meanings are constantly evolving. It’s all a matter of taste or perspective. For instance, you might look at the hip-hop that we make at Glamour and say that the word hip-hop is essentially slang for the fact that we all take some kind of stimulant drug. If that really was what the word means to us, we wouldn’t have chosen Glamour for the logo. (See below) But the point is that it’s all a matter of what we think is cool. It’s something that’s always been a part of the sound. It always has been. If you take the lyrics of other artists, you’ll find that they tend to be very lyrical, and when you consider the fact that there are lyrics in our lyrics, even in our rap, it makes no difference. It’s still rap. There is no question. Even in the lyrics of R&B artists, it’s still rap. The whole point of rap is the fact that we don’t have to pay the rent. We live in a luxury apartment with my brother and I, and we buy everything we need on the cheap. There are a lot of rappers you can compare us to. You’ll find a lot of similarities. Our lyrics are very similar to what we’ve known our whole life. It’s a pretty big contrast. One guy, like Jay-Z, could just tell, “This line doesn’t make sense.” It’s just not hip-hop anymore. There are a lot of rappers that are still rap. They write songs about girls, and they write them in a very poetic manner. That may not reflect what’s gonna happen in America tomorrow. Jay-Z is still hip-hop. But even Jay-Z would still be rhyming with a prostitute. He hasn’t been writing about that shit for years.
Hilary Duff: My mother used to tell me, “You got no idea what it’s like to live like a princess, when you’re in your mid-30s.” I think we’re all in a similar situation. It’s like getting out of a really comfortable bubble, like an apartment. Things start to change and it doesn’t feel like the same thing anymore. And the only way to handle it is to learn a little bit about what is really happening now as people’s views change.
Do you think hip-hop has had any impact on politics in this decade?
