I think I am the only one in the world who actually has an original thought without a reference. In rap, there is no reference point.

As a visual artist, I believe in the medium itself.

This is an art form, not a genre. It’s an artform. There’s no genre. Rap is one of the most powerful forms of expression that we have. I don’t think you can understand how strong it is in the context of a whole society without actually living it. But again, that’s part of the reason why I am doing this: to try to help explain this art, to see how we’re making it.

If there is one thing to be said about you, it is that you are an iconoclast—that is, very open to change, to being out there, speaking out, and taking things to the street. How do you stay grounded and do your work on the streets?

We’re all artists. My body has a way of resisting and challenging the status quo. I never thought of myself as an artist. I never thought of myself as being on a mission to change the world, or change how the world sees me.

As far as what I am working on, I would say it’s a very broad range of topics, from things that I’m working on, to my personal interests, to the wider world. I have been putting it out there more and more so that it’s easier for everybody to enjoy it. I’ve been saying this for years, but the people that are reading today know that these are my personal thoughts. I’ll do my best to answer the questions; I won’t say, “Well, the world is really an ugly place and there are no solutions.” I’ll say something about it. But I believe we need to work together to make things better. The problem is that the solution has to be something that fits in with what we need to survive, so that it doesn’t just mean, “We need to cut all of this.” That’s not going to work.

You have been in some pretty provocative situations over the years. What do you do when you need to get away from it?

I work on a lot of things like, “Well, would it be OK to kill the man who just kidnapped my girlfriend?”

Do some of these ideas come from personal experiences? Some of it is just generalization?
