How long do people take to get into a rap group? Why don’t they just stick with it? Are there any rappers who get more fans and money?

We’d probably talk to some of them. If they’re in a group to begin with they’re not really sure what they want. If they’re in a rap group it depends on how it’s created, and if the group is going to remain true to the hip-hop lifestyle and not be too big or too small. Rap groups have a certain look and they’re like, “What do I have to do to make my rap more successful?” To them, it’s the “I am what I am and I always will be.” It wouldn’t matter what you are or what you do, if you’re in it to make a quick buck.

I was talking to a girl last night [who] had a band. She was in a rap group for a few years before it started as a gang of six or seven. What was it like growing up with all these other kids in your group?

It wasn’t too bad, because you have the people in your group. You’ve known each other before, and that made things easier. There was no real time for other people to get caught up in the business.

You’re talking about growing up in a gang, though.

Yeah, you have your own gang of people. There were like four or five other people from the same street, so it was always a gang environment. If you got caught outside your house, you were a suspect. There was no reason to go there. Even if you got caught by the cops, you were a suspect. So that was kind of just, “Keep your head down.”

Were you really a gang banger?

No, I was just a little crazy. [Laughs]. I mean, I could be a gangster, but I’m gonna be a real gangster. I’m gonna have no problems, because I’m not that crazy. I don’t have no qualms with anybody, because I’m not the baddest of the bad boys or the crazy. There’s always going to be that person.

Can you tell us something about how you started with the Hip Hop group L.A. Boyz?
