What skills do you need to be a director? – Digital Filmmaking 101 Camera

Are you good at editing and in storyboarding?

Can you make fun, funny or emotional films?

Have you worked as a producer, in marketing and advertising, in communications, etc? If so, have you been promoted or made more money than you had anticipated?

Have your own personal qualities or skills helped you advance at whatever you do?

For example, if you have a passion for film editing or directing, have you researched, been to film school and studied to become successful at screenwriting? What has taught you at different levels so that there are no gaps in your knowledge? Is there any film editing or screenwriting you’d recommend to help others?

If you’ve answered no to the questions above, you’re already doing much better than most people thinking they could become a director.

What about your family and friends?

What about your career, career ambition, career goals, current career path, career goals, etc? What would your parents or friends tell you? Do they say that you’ve already overcome what they thought were insurmountable hurdles or did they give you just enough to make you want to give them a helping hand? Do they agree with you when you say that you can and should work harder?

Who will be your director?

Don’t be a perfectionist. It may be hard and may sometimes feel like too much of a personal attack, but make the best of this. And remember, you’re here to teach. You’ve become a director because you want to teach your students about your life, but don’t let the ego get in the way of teaching students about yours (and about your film career).

What is the biggest obstacle in your path as a director? Can you think of some real solutions and suggestions?

Don’t wait until you achieve your first film and then try to be a true director. The biggest obstacle is to change yourself, not your career. Your journey may be the toughest one you’ll ever take, but that’s the nature of the journey.

The best advice I gave on how to take my first shot as a director, was by Michael Moore. The film, Bowling for Columbine, which Michael made about the Columbine shootings, was shot in the first couple weeks of December 1999 and went on to have a worldwide theatrical run and have been a significant cinematic influence.
