At least that’s what I thought at the time, and I still think about it. There is a lot of work that goes into the making of a film. For a movie to really be successful it has to be thought out and built from the ground up. As you might imagine, the same goes for the story and actors, storyboards, directors, and crew. I like to think that if you can make something that’s so unique and so unique that a lot of people look at it and say, “Wow, that’s not normal?” I guess that’s where I ended up. In the end, I guess I would have liked a little more luck. I have nothing but respect for other people that have more opportunities than we did.

The movie was a hit at the box office in America, and in Australia it became a surprise hit. Was it a success in Australia?

I think so. That’s probably the biggest compliment I get there. It went on to make $130 million in that market, and then it shot to $165 million internationally. It’s one of those movies that is just something that gets people’s attention and they want to see it again. Australians love a good surprise. It’s a funny story that I have to admit. My agent told me, “You should get more attention around here. I haven’t had any bad experiences there yet… If you can get to Australia and film and make the first movie, I think that will send a message that there’s success in filmmaking here.” I think that’s basically the truth. I guess I did well enough there to be treated like royalty by many in the film industry.

So what has been the most memorable experience filming the movie that you’d like to share with people?

For me, my favorite moment is when I actually sat down with Chris and told him about the film, which was not easy… We would have the whole day before. My agent had already called Chris’s name and that was the first time that it happened. When Chris called mine, I thought maybe that wouldn’t happen. But it did. I actually ended up watching a version of the film in English, with only the French dubbed. I thought: Well, I know that it’s the real thing. I’ve seen it in a different language.
