Professional comic writing starts with your own story, that is to say, by writing to help others tell their own stories. Comics are a form of creative writing that has a long and storied tradition of telling stories. As a young journalist, I became interested in the work of famous writers such as Jack Kerouac and Ernest Hemingway. After studying English in Britain, I moved to the US for a degree, where I read a lot of classic American short stories and westerns, and found myself in a writer’s workshop. The work I did there helped to hone my skills as a storyteller and helped me refine my craft as a person. After a few years writing in this way, as a professional writer I began to have a good taste of what worked for other writers. Then I received the assignment to write a story for a comic published by a leading comic publishing company. It was the best job I’d ever had, but it took so many different routes and techniques. Some of them, I am still learning. But, for nearly a year I worked on the script at their studio in San Diego, and during that time I got to meet some of the very best people working in comics. It was an amazing experience for me, as well as for those people who supported me creatively.
