In his book On Fire: The True Story of the Firebombing of Dresden in 1945, Joe Hill recounts the story of the “firestorm of destruction” which hit the city in May 1945. He describes what happened when two German bombers, German “Mannlicher” twin-engined fighters capable of delivering up to two thousand-pound of conventional explosives per minute, were launched from Focke-Wulf Fw 190s, and flew at a cruising speed of 6,500 kilometers per hour. The Dresden-based RAF FW 190s responded with gunfire against the German fighters and managed to shoot down the first bomber but were outgunned by the second, which circled the city for four hours and bombed over 2,000 buildings—mostly residential buildings including the Reich Chancellery. However, when bombing reached the German capital the German pilots were now flying directly at the city from the countryside, not facing RAF fighters as they had done before.
At the end of April 1945, the Berlin Wall fell, and Hitler had declared that he had won the war. Hill writes: “The Germans knew that Dresden was about to be destroyed.” The city of some 60,000 people was now in a military zone and therefore considered strategically important. It was to the German Army that the city fell—two days after the Allied landing on D-Day. Two weeks ago, historian Robert Bader wrote an article in the New York Times headlined “Dresden Must Never Be Forgotten.” Bader recalled that before the German bombers landed on March 5th, they sent a message to the city saying: “Your time is up, and there is no going back now.”
In his book Hill mentions Dresden’s famous “Bauhaus Palace,” built in 1928 and a symbol of industrial genius in Germany prior to the war. According to Hill, after the war the Palace was used as a concentration camp by the Nazis. The Palace was reconstructed in 1938, and by 1940 the building had become the headquarters of the DIA (German Intelligence Operation Agency). This was the agency whose personnel, including many Americans, were accused of spying for the British during the war.
