Where did pole dance originated? – Beginning Pole Dance Moves Olga Kodak

The sport of pole dance first debuted in the 1930s. It was popular at carnivals because it was easy to learn–with basic moves and no special equipment.

What is pole dancing?

Pole dancing is a style of dancing that has a twist of movement where a dancer stands on one leg and then uses the other leg to turn around and perform a dance. It has many variations. At one point, it began to become popular for women who wanted more freedom in dancing than the traditional ballet style and wanted to be able to dance without the legs attached to them, the way a man would.

Did people try it when it wasn’t called pole dancing?

Yes. It really started to get big a few years after the 1920s, around the time of World War II, when a new breed of dancers were emerging. At the height of the style in the 1940s there were as many as 400 events in the country.

By the 1990s, it had fallen off a cliff. There was no longer a demand for it, since the only thing that was going to give women more choices in how to dance was going to be dance studios.

Now, there’s the resurgence of pole dancing, but it hasn’t yet grown to the size it had in decades. It’s still a niche that a lot of women go to when they want to dance at home.

What happened to the idea that women needed a variety of moves to be dancers?

It had many faces, but the idea that only certain moves or styles were suitable for women was widespread during the first few decades of modern dance.

Even at the height of the 1950s and 60s there was one or two women who were seen in nightclubs trying out moves that weren’t seen and still today, there are people who feel the same way.

The pole dance that now defines our culture was probably invented during World War II. That’s why there are so many different styles.

Why do pole dancers call it “Pole Dancing”?

The name of the dance is a bit of a misnomer. It’s really more of a genre. The word pole dance itself comes from the Middle English for “pole.” In Latin, the word for “pole” is nimba, meaning “pole.” In Greek, word for “pole” is trita, meaning “pole.”
