What is a good photographer to use when taking pictures of a new, unfamiliar place?

If you’re like the rest of us, you’ve probably experienced both the good and the bad of taking photographs. Even if you are in the good situations, some things can become a headache and, worse, ruin your experience as a photographer. Here are the top tips to help you avoid the worst.

The best college is definitely the best place for photography. In my experience, this is a combination of being able to get your project done, be in the best position to take care of your gear, and most importantly, having good mentors or students to help you succeed.

My advice to you right now is to start applying to colleges where you can actually afford to live on your own. A lot of these colleges can be a little pricey, especially if you’re not from a big city. You won’t be getting scholarships or being able to get away from it all (aside from your dorm room).

However, if you can afford it, don’t get discouraged by just looking at the top schools. Many of these schools will be very competitive and it’s important to make use of every advantage you can get! My recommendation is to get into a small city that has a good photography scene and study that. Not everyone can afford to travel across the country, and you’ll probably get an advantage if you make the most of a small town where you already know people.

Do you really know where your picture will end up? It’s not really a fair question if you’re taking pictures in the woods or in a parking lot. For some images, people can get away from you and you’ll have to get back to shooting. This is when having a good mentor or students is key!

Another benefit from a small city is that you’ll have to get used to different lighting/environment. While I’ve been taking pictures in some pretty extreme conditions, I’ve also been in some very sunny locations. You can just have to shoot in a way that works for you!

When can you take pictures in a really dark place?

When would you really be OK making a picture of someone you don’t know? I can’t tell you when in New York City you’d ever get to make that type of shot. That’s why you should definitely avoid it!
