MOSCOW, Aug 23 (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin defended Russian security forces’ actions in Crimea on Wednesday, in the latest sign that Moscow is responding to the presence of Ukrainian troops on Moscow’s frontier and the presence of U.S. warships in the Sea of Azov.

“I have to say that I am in complete agreement with General (Viktor) Yushchenko that we do not want to allow the use of force against our troops,” Putin said after meeting him privately in the Kremlin. In a phone call later on Ukraine’s prime minister Yatseniuk said Putin told him that Russian military involvement in Crimea had nothing to do with sanctions imposed by the West.
