The Washington Capitals were supposed to be more focused this week on the Stanley Cup Playoffs than their last three games and the team’s first-round opponent.
But their focus was disrupted by a series of unfortunate losses.
Instead, they opened the year with wins, including a 3-1 win in Nashville, which was a major surprise given the Predators are one of the worst teams in the postseason.
“I think that it’s been a little tougher than we anticipated,” said Capitals general manager George McPhee on Friday after the team’s morning skate. “But I think we showed a bit of what we’re capable of, and we were able to capitalize on what we have.”
The Capitals (24-14-8) still trail the Nashville Predators by four and could potentially fall out of the playoff race if the Predators win the weekend series against Pittsburgh by one point.
“Obviously we were hoping that would be the case,” said Predators winger James Neal, who had nine points (two goals, eight assists) in nine games.
This has been a season so far when fans are rooting for the Predators (27-16-10), even if they were watching those games in a different time zone, McPhee noted.
The Capitals were 13-1-1 in their previous 18 games and are 3-1-2 under coach Barry Trotz, but were 3-5-4 in the first 19 and 1-2-3 in their last five.
With a trip to Minnesota to play the Wild (31-6-5) looming Saturday, Trotz could be looking for a win in Nashville while trying to put another dent in the Predators’ playoff record.
“We haven’t won, but we’re on a roll,” McPhee said. “I think we’re starting to play some good hockey. I think it gives a little confidence in the organization. I think it gives us an extra push.”
