This is one of those questions. I like the mirrorless cameras for the simple fact that I get to use more lenses on more shots. The biggest advantage of this sort of camera is that on a mirrorless, you can shoot up to 4GB of RAW files — you can then crop to whatever size you want without wasting any camera memory by trying to fit a whole bunch of frames (or even a single one) in one image. You can also shoot at the “1/320th sec″ frame rate, which makes it easy to take long, deep-focus shots. You can also keep the RAW files you save in this format as a separate backup. In the case of the GX8, that backup RAW file format, for example, is very small: just 512MB. And this is all on an 8-megapixel camera at ISO 100 and at full resolution.

But what if you plan on shooting more than just photos? A digital SLR camera with a 5-megapixel or 7-megapixel sensor might be the way to go for you because of the smaller sensor capacity and the lower maximum amount of RAW image size. But if you’re taking stills or video, using a digital SLR gives you the chance to take larger photos or videos — for example, it’s worth considering taking videos as opposed to stills or shooting slow motion video using a fast-action camera like the Nikon D500 for example.

What’s new? Some newer products come with the ability to shoot RAW files, so if you want to take the best photos of the moments you have and keep them in a file format you control, you can. Just remember to backup the entire file (including RAW files) so you can revert to a backup if you need to.
