While some rap music enthusiasts regard Snoop Dogg as one of the world’s best, others dispute that judgment. The rapper said Wednesday that he does still consider himself a “rapper” — a term he first uses in his 1996 song “Flamingo Blues” — but he’s not one yet. “I don’t rap anymore,” the 36-year-old rapper told Billboard in the interview that ran in Newsweek. “The music that I used to make as a rap artist has no life in it. The people that like it don’t like me now. My career was a success but it’s gone. It got ruined.”

The former “Pacman,” Snoop’s former stage name and nickname, said he’s “not proud” of his earlier work. “The music got turned off. I’m glad I did it. It was a blast,” he admitted. “I love the music. It’s got a life, but that’s it.”

In the interview, the rapper also talks about his life before and after “Doggystyle.” While he was a star in school, he attended college and “worked as a doctor,” a role that brought a measure of financial stability to him. That all changed when he became a rapper himself. “I was doing a job where it got too expensive, so I came back to school, and I started raps for a living,” he told Billboard. “I love rap. I was an idiot to even think about music.”
