But we’re not here to judge that! Instead, we’re here to talk about an indie film whose budget doesn’t even scratch the surface of what’s possible in a smaller market, let alone the larger indie world.
I’m not talking about movies like This Is How Far I’ll Go and Pixels, which were made and sold with big ambitions for their budgets. That’s a topic for an article by itself. This article is just to talk about the indie-film world we live in. I don’t mean to demean that side of the business.
I’m talking about a genre of films that are rarely talked about except in the context of big budget genre films: indie.
What does indie mean?
Indie means different things to different people, and it can be difficult to communicate what it means to different people. If you’re someone like me, then you might think of indie indie films as an amalgamation of film-noir, genre, and musical movies with a few different genres thrown in there. That’s not entirely accurate since indie movies are made with the same kind of creativity and imagination that gets you into a room like mine in the first place.
So for me, it’s more a matter of what indie means to me than what it means to someone else.
There are so many indie films making waves this year. Some made huge money; some made the big bucks. Some were great; others were pretty terrible. What makes a great independent film? What kind of films are making waves and what are I missing to talk about?
Well, I’m going to tackle that a different way this year, and I’m going to try and do this by listing a number of great indie films for both audiences and filmmakers.
