Barely a year has passed since Narendra Modi started using YouTube and has had 1.57 crore videos uploaded to his channel. The Prime Minister, who is one of the top influencers on Facebook on the Internet, has now crossed the one billion monthly users mark in a single month on the platform.

During his address to the country, PM Modi said ‘a nation without a culture is doomed to fall prey to extremist forces’.

The country’s ‘culture department’ has already issued orders to check a total of 1.57 crore videos on the site.

According to a report in India Today, the website, through which Modi’s videos have been watched, has been made available at least 10 gigabytes of ‘video data’ to be used in the Ministry for Culture for ‘sensitive and specific use’ of the country’s cultural legacy. It has thus been decided to ‘improve’ the government’s digital services in the Digital India campaign.

The ‘sensitive and specific use’ part refers to the government’s move to utilise the Internet to boost the economy, increase foreign direct investment, and further create better connectivity. It also means that the government is hoping to tap into the vast information resources of the Internet to find out what people are watching and talking about – such as videos from previous PMs, their speeches, political parties and other
