“There are quite a few.” she said quietly, taking another one from her bag. “I do like the pencil that my friend Kana does. I’ve got a lot of favorites like that. But for the most part, I like to draw with my eyes on my notebook.”

“Then which one should I use?”

“I don’t like to think about that kind of thing, though. You’ll have to decide for yourself. And since you’re looking forward to going, do you think you can afford the new pencil and paper?”

In my defense, I hadn’t gotten anything like a new pencil or paper in weeks, so the offer might surprise me.

“Sure,” said I.

“When you’re ready, we’ll write you a special message. You’ll bring your favorite picture to me, but you don’t have to draw it yourself. And, if you want to, you can draw with me before I decide what to write or do.”

“That sounds good,” I agreed.

She led me to a corner of the living room, where I stood in front of the computer, reading the article at a snail’s pace. It hadn’t happened in a while, even though I’d been busy preparing for the trip. “Are you writing anything yet?” she asked me as I sat on the sofa.

“I’m still working on it,” I said, putting down my pencil. “I’m sorry I don’t seem to be on the right page with you, Kana.”

“It doesn’t matter. I know you’re all busy as it is, and it’s just something you have to do. I’ll see you soon. I’ll be around for a while, but don’t think I won’t take care of you.”

“Okay,” I smiled.

She didn’t move from her seat, nor did she say anything until I was out of earshot.

So I waited until I was out of earshot before answering. “This is just something I need to get done,” I said, trying to sound casual. “At least it won’t take long. I’ll see you soon.”

She smiled warmly after she’d spoken, nodding with a tiny smile. “Are you feeling alright?”

“I feel pretty great,” I answered immediately.
