I think you would agree that it is a drawing (and I’m pretty sure you would use it to describe a drawing). I’m going to call it a drawing of my own child, because that’s what it is – of my own child.
Of course, drawing pictures is a lot less complicated than writing a book, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done, and this drawing of the baby doesn’t show any of the work I put into developing it.

So, here goes. I have this drawing of my child in about half the time it would take you to read it. And I’ve chosen the right palette.
It starts with a blue background that’s saturated with red.
Next comes the baby. Her eyes are very wide open as she looks at me. Her mouth is slightly open and we can hear her breathing.
I have her belly pressed up against the background and I have her legs very still. She’s breathing very fast, and her skin is a lighter color.
The last part of the baby’s picture follows me and makes the baby’s face stand out slightly.
To me, this color palette is a good way to keep the image consistent with what my drawing was before. This doesn’t mean I’m going to stick to it, because there can always be a few tweaks here and there. But I can always pick out the background or the baby’s face from these details.
This idea of taking one aspect of an image and changing it to suit one specific purpose – coloring it – really fascinates me. I think it’s fun to try to work on different things with different elements. I really like this idea.
One of the first examples that I came upon using my own child as an illustrator was a small illustration of the first of my four children, Tatum.
That illustration, a quick sketch of my second child, Max, was inspired by the famous drawings of my two youngest. I can’t tell you why I did that. It just came to me. I really like this idea of taking your image, and working off that. It doesn’t usually work like this though, because for some reason the image is still there. And at the same time I am finding it difficult to capture the original emotion of the image.
