Pencils: a medium for better expression?
I’ve been using a wide variety of pencils for my art from all over the world for about 30 years now. I’ve owned dozens, even hundreds, of different styles and thicknesses of them. It’s not uncommon for me to carry different pencils in my bag throughout the day since I’ve found that certain combinations, when used effectively, are much more effective for art.
As I use my art, I’m constantly looking for an experience that will help me create something that is more personal and memorable–a feel that I feel in the moment, as opposed to the piece as I draw it. I don’t know anything about how these different pencils handle heat, sharpness and drying times, but this week I want to spend some time looking over my personal library of pencils as I use them to create things that will become works of art. I’ve picked a few that I hope will prove useful in this exploration of mine.
I began by focusing on a few different eras and styles of pencils. From there, I started exploring different pencils that were popular in my day and how they have changed significantly since then.
I’m going to focus primarily on the first few decades of the pencil era–the 1950s to 1970s. These years are a favorite point of discussion when it comes to pencils for most artists. There is quite a bit of debate as to exactly when the pencil renaissance began (as I’ve discussed previously), but pencils were already a significant part of the artist’s toolkit and these decades show a sharp rise in popularity.
