I think hard is hard, but not that hard. I feel so lucky to be on this journey to build a career in film. I’m not going to lie. The first time I turned a camera on I felt a lot of pressure and anxiety on this planet. But that pressure has totally receded. I think now I don’t have that anxiety anymore—I’m like, “Wow, what a relief!”
How do you want to be remembered, in a genre that celebrates directors like Tarantino, Mel Gibson, and so many others? Because if you leave a mark in the world I think that’s a good thing for the future of film.
Well, I’m a filmmaker, so we’ll see. That’s all I’m going to say for now, because I have a lot of stories to tell. [Laughs.] All I’ll say is, I’m the biggest Tarantino fan.”
As you got younger, did you feel different as an actor, or did you still feel like a young kid?
No, I wasn’t a young kid anymore. I’ve always been an actor, ever since I was very little, and I just kept working to get to the big stars. When I was 9 or 10 years old, I became an actor and I did everything from stand-up to film school. I think the world has really changed for us actors. I don’t know how to describe it, but we are able to be the person that a lot of people would see us as—an actor. And then, once we get to that point, we see the world the way that we want to see it. I can say it because my experience with a lot of the big stars has been so different from other actors. I have this dream-like dream, to be able to play the role that I want to play. I don’t have a choice whether it’s playing a guy in a comedy or someone with a huge voice like a Samuel L. Jackson. I want to be able to step in and be the main character, but I also have the desire and inspiration to create this world for myself. My friends and I also play those roles, and what I’ve learned is that they’re not the same role that they’re playing on the screen. You can’t just have one version. You have to play them both. I’m always on the lookout for more new stories to tell, so I am always looking for new ways to play the character.
