A. If you see a swing up then you’re hitting the ball. The ball will go up. The ball will come back down. It’s what it’s all about, the swing. If you’re swinging and you’re at a dead-center position and the ball starts moving sideways, the ball is going to stay there. So you’re going to go through the swing the same way you stay there.

Q. Why did you leave baseball?

A. Because it was hard to have control over what happened on the field, and my control was limited here. So I don’t regret that.

Q. What is your role at home in the Royals’ new, aggressive offense?

A. I have to be up there to give information and pitch out of the bullpen to get the pitchers that are doing different things from what the front office wants to do. I take it all as a team, I take it all at face value and I go from there.

It started on June 6, 1999, the same day my first grandson was born. I was not having a good time. I was struggling with the symptoms I would later have for my postpartum depression. So when the doctor showed me my newborn, crying like a baby, in the room. At first it was terrifying. Then I realized there was something very wrong.

My doctor showed me the baby’s heartbeat. At the same time, they started to inject me with saline. Then when I started to take a shower, I felt the baby crying. I thought something was wrong. I couldn’t sleep, I was getting worse, and it was all very confusing. I didn’t know where the hell I was. I needed to get out.

I went to the hospital.

I spent the next 3 days with 3 nurses who all had me on a ventilator and an IV with fluid. I couldn’t eat.

I got the word that my daughter’s due date was the week after I had to leave.

The day my baby died. I remember thinking, this is not going to end well.

I had no idea what to do.

When I saw her lying in my car, I was paralyzed with rage.
